in israel, a secret is more than information — it’s a quiet language, a shield, a source of power, or a cause for fear. it can be political, social, or deeply personal. in an age that prizes transparency, what remains of the secret? perhaps it now lives as an act of subversion, asking only to be heard differently.
created in collaboration with the rubinstein center for constitutional challenges at reichman university.

Through four films from across the Arab world, a comparative gaze unfolds on young girls and boys at a moment of rupture — poised between childhood and adulthood, between personal identity and a society that does not always grant it space to exist. These films explore the experience of coming-of-age, set against the political and social landscapes in which it takes shape.

This exploration stems from my personal connection with my grandmother, who raised me within a culture and language that gradually receded from my life. Five years after her passing, I found myself returning to them through music and films, in an attempt to mourn, to bridge, and to reconnect with an identity I had distanced myself from in childhood.

(Linguistic note — the title “أربعة الفيلم” is intentionally written in a way that does not follow the standard rules of Modern Standard Arabic.)

the book explores ethnic segregation within israeli society, with a particular emphasis on jewish immigrants originating from arab countries and their descendants.it delves into the societal transformation where an entire community has undergone cultural and linguistic assimilation to integrate into israeli society.

through a researcher's lens, the book aims to dissect this phenomenon by examining the sectarian discourse, the clash between ethnic and local cultures, as well as the challenges and barriers faced by immigrants from arab countries.
